US Open 2019: A preview
Our picks for the final winners
Here is the last slam of the year. In the last decade this is the slam that was most won by the outsiders, i.e. players other than Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and Williams. This uncertainty to the tournament is largely caused due to the top players getting tired after a long season. Injuries also creep into the players that help others to compete with the top players with better competition. This is the most difficult slam to predict.
The draw has theoretically provided Federer an opportunity to avenge his Wimbledon loss to Djokovic in the semi-finals. However, watching Federer against Rublev in Cincinnati, it looks highly unlikely for that to happen. Federer looked jaded and not in the match. Rublev did play the match of his life, but Federer’s tiredness should not be an issue as it was his first tournament since Wimbledon.
Djokovic is showing the hunger and desire of 2016 to again win all slams and become the greatest of all time. His toughest competition will be his ownself, Nadal and Medvedev. Nadal win the Coupe de Rogers without a sweat and looked in prime form and fitness, however, his record against Djokovic and at this time of the year, are both not great. Its highly unlikely for him to win the US Open.
Medvedev has his breakout year in 2019 and consistently played well in the majors and masters. However, winning a slam needs experience and luck falling his way. This may not happen this year. However, amongst the non-three players, he is the best bet to win the US Open this year.
The other contenders – lets say pretenders (Thiem on non-clay surfaces) – have all started to wilt against the greatest three of all time. Murray should not be in the same sentence as the three. Tsitsipas hasn’t shown the hunger or desire to continue his breakout year from 2018 into 2019, while Zverev has again lost focus. He is making Laver look bad. I feel sorry for Laver and not Zverev.
And yeah, Kyrgios is always good to put a fiver. Because if he gets his head straight, he could win anything and everything. But will he get his head straight?
In the womens’s, Barty has been the most consistent player of the season while Osaka has struggled with Injuries and a drama of her own making – firing Sascha. Halep with other win of Wimbledon and playing exceptionally well should be the favorite to win the US Open especially with Serena struggling to win the finals in the last two years.
My pick for the winner: Djokovic, Halep
